Cleaning up Strijp R
On Tuesday 8 February I went to the location of Strijp R to take Photos. I had already asked by mail if I could take Photos on the location, the answer was that I had to ask it to the foreman who was on the location. So I went to him to ask if it was possible, the answer was that it was not possible that day, but the next Friday he had some time to guide me over the area.

Strijp R is an old industrial area which will be reformed into a residential area. The most buildings are already broken down, some of the buildings are partly left over to give them a new intention in the new area. The whole area is used for about 100 years by the industry. The main goal of the area was to make TV tubes for all kinds of TV’s. The TV tube is the main part of the TV where the image which you see on the TV will be made. All the parts of the TV tube where made on this area. In this state of the transformation of the area the pollution in the ground will be removed, after which the build of the new buildings can start. To get the pollution out of the ground, a special company is on the site which is specialized in this kind of pollution.

Friday the 11th of February I went back, right after school, to Strijp R. The foreman told me the security rules, such as to wear special clothing. After this we went to a special container in which the special clothing hangs. It was nothing more than an overall and some boots, but these are effective when you get some oil on your clothing, it will not come through the overall. After we changed our clothing, the tour began. The foreman showed me an area which was already done. Here was the former canon montage, a canon in a TV is a part in which the colors are “fired” on the TV screen. All the colors on the TV are made with 3 colors, Red Green and Blue. These colors are fired on every pixel on the screen so every pixel can have every color. After the first step of cleaning this place, they have placed a system called “In-Situ”; this is a special system that will get the pollution on a natural way out of the ground.

After he showed me this area, we went to a building that is still partly there. In this building is the former garage of the area, in here the trucks were stalled. Also there were some offices, in one of these my father worked, his office is still there. He was a safety advisor for the whole area. This building will be partly left over because there is a special guard’s post which will be renovated.

After this we walked further on and came by an area where in the past the building in which test tubes and small series of tubes were made was standing. Next to this building was the Glass factory, in which the glass for the TV tubes were made and pressed in the right shape. Between these buildings was a walking bridge which is still there. The buildings are removed, so the bridge is standing there alone. The area of the glass factory is now getting cleaned, the ground will be excavated and cleaned on site. When the ground is clean, it will be placed back and the in-situ system will be installed. Next to this area is also a building still partly intact, this building used to be for making the Phosphorus for in the TV tube. The canon shoot the colors to the Phosphorus, the phosphorus makes the right colors on the screen. The Phosphorus is placed on the back of the screen you look at.

On the center of the Strijp R was a tall building, this was partly offices and partly laboratories. This building was blown up and now only the basement is still there. This also has to be removed in some time. Next to this building is a small building that still stands. This is a building in which the air pressure, steam and al the energy which was needed for all the buildings was made and transferred to all the buildings.

On the rest of the area are still buildings, some of these will be removed, some will stay. In one of the buildings is now a company of an artist which makes furniture, this will be part of the new area. This building was used to made magnets.

In 4 years the area will clean and the new buildings will be built for new use. The area is then completely transformed in a residential area in which some parts still have a remaining of the old factory’s in which the old TV’s where made.

Many thanks to the forman of the area.
